Every plan has a formulary: its list of covered prescription drugs. Two plans can cover the same medicine at very different prices.
What to look for
- Is it on the list? Search the plan's drug list for each medicine, by name and dose.
- Which tier? Drugs are grouped into tiers. Higher tiers usually cost you more each fill.
- Any extra steps? Some drugs need approval first, or require trying a lower-cost drug before.
- Before or after the deductible? Some plans cover generics with a copay right away; others make you meet the deductible first.
Have your list ready
Write down every medicine and dose you take. In Fast Track you can add them from the National Library of Medicine's drug list, and an agent can check them against each plan.
