Losing your health insurance? You have a 60-day window

If you lost coverage or are about to, a Special Enrollment Period gives you 60 days to get a new plan. Here is how the clock works.

When job-based or other qualifying coverage ends, you don't have to wait for Open Enrollment. You get a Special Enrollment Period, but it has a deadline.

How the 60 days work

  • You may qualify if you lost qualifying coverage in the past 60 days, or expect to lose it in the next 60 days.
  • After losing job-based coverage, you need to apply within 60 days.
  • A plan can start the first day of the month after your job-based coverage ends, so applying early can mean no gap at all.

What happens if you miss it

If the 60 days pass, you usually have to wait for the next Open Enrollment to get a new plan, unless another life change opens a new window. Until then, you could be paying for care yourself.

Do these now

  1. Find the exact last day of your current coverage.
  2. Write down your doctors and the medicines you take.
  3. Estimate your household income for this year.
  4. Talk with a licensed agent and apply so the new plan starts the day after the old one ends.
